Smallest Girl in the World Defies Odds, Remains Strong Despite Looking Like a Fragile Doll

When Charlotte Garside of Withernsea, East Yorks was born, she just weighed 2 lbs and was so small that doctors told her mother, Emma, that the child might not survive a few days, possibly just weeks but she has defied the odds and remains strong despite looking like a fragile doll.

Mom Emma admits she gets upset every time people refer to her daughter as Baby Charlotte. For Emma, Charlotte might be small but she’s definitely not a baby! And she’s a strong young child who, according to her sister Chloe, is a strong child who wouldn’t keep still for one minute.

Charlotte actually has a very rare form of dwarfism; it was so rare that doctors had no idea what to call it at first as they tried to diagnose the girl during her first few weeks since birth.

Born at just 2 lbs and being just 27 inches tall, Charlotte had slim chances of survival but despite experiencing numerous challenges and medical emergencies, she lived.

When she turned 5 years old in 2013, her parents enrolled her in school. But because she was just 9lbs at the time and having a learning of that of a 3-year-old child, they were afraid that perhaps she might not be able to adjust well in school and interact with other kids.

The Garsides hired a private tutor to assist Charlotte in school; this allowed her to have a semblance of a normal life, just like other kids.

Although Charlotte is a one-in-a-million baby with some health problems, she is not the sort of person who will fade into the background. She may be small but she has a massive personality and wants to do everything a normal 5-year-old does. She is very inquisitive and the school have already told us she has a learning age of a 3-year-old, which is higher than we thought,” Mom Emma said.

Charlotte’s sisters are quite proud of her.

She might look like a doll but she’s made of strong stuff. She loves tearing around the house and being thrown in the air. When people first meet her they are afraid she might break if they touch her – but she’s quite scrappy and doesn’t sit still for a second,” Chloe said.

Sabrina said, “I see her as a normal 5-year-old, just smaller than a 5-year-old.”
